Whatever your opinions about Covid restrictions there is one fact that is indisputable.
Restrictions can only work when people agree to follow them.
No matter the legal basis our country does not have the ability to police or enforce restrictions in the face of mass non compliance. That is why it is critical that all restrictions are reasonable, practical and applied to everyone equally.
Against a background of 6,000 people a day gathered at Glasgow Green to watch football – with no testing or other precautions – I learned about two restrictions being loosened today.
Until today, the people carrying the coffin at a funeral had to be from the same household. Until today, that few minutes of symbolic shared service has been denied to families, friends, whoever would have been honoured with the role, unless they lived together.
Until today, the person walking the bride or groom down the aisle to their wedding had to wear a face covering. If there was to be a reception, the staff, musicians, photographers etc in attendance were counted in the numbers of allowed guests.
Dancing is still not allowed at weddings, nor is singing along with the band.
How can the First Minister expect people to continue to comply with draconian restrictions after more than a year when Scotlands case numbers are at an all time high but unrestricted mass gatherings for football are simply ignored as if they were irrelevant?
